MACE

We found Robbie’s body about a half mile away from camp. His head hung from a tree the same way Chester’s had except his eyes had been left in his head and tears of blood streamed down his face. The same word was carved in his cheeks. His body hadn’t been mutilated further and we were left with the same task of burial and a funeral. This time, we needed Tyrese’s help and he kept Aminata at his side the entire time. We wrapped Robbie in a white blanket and carried him down to the beach. Tyrese, Tim and Bubba dug the hole for him while I went back to camp to gather what remained of his things. A few personal affects had survived the sinking ship. A rosary. A laminated psalm translated into Spanish. A photograph of him kissing another man on the lips. I wrapped those things in his black kerchief and brought them down to the beach.

I helped the men dig the rest of the hole. Six feet deep. Bubba and Tim were both beet red by the time we finished. Tyrese was visibly upset, brooding and he eyed each of us suspiciously. I couldn’t gauge Amy’s reaction. During the day time and under Tyrese’s watchful eye, she wasn’t prone to making any moves that might expose our continued dalliances to him.We lowered Robbie’s body into the grave and I dropped his personal items down over him. Tyrese shoveled the first scoop of sand onto Robbie’s body and that’s when it really hit me. He was dead. Decapitated. Killed and skinned like one of our geese or rabbits. When I joined the army, my ma always told me that once you can take an animal to slaughter, you can kill a man. I didn’t believe her until I joined the SEALs and saw it with my own two eyes. Some men took to killing more than others. Whoever had killed Chubb and Peña took to it like a fish to water.

Once Robbie was buried and a mound of sand heaped upon his frigid final resting place, we stood around solemnly. Chubb’s funeral had been one thing. But Robbie? He hadn’t had problems with anyone, except Ellis recently. He was a team player. A bit of an ass, but a good man. What could any of us say to memorialize him, or to explain it. I’d listened to Amy’s suspicions about Bubba, but if he had killed Robbie, he was doing a good job of concealing his feelings about the matter. He appeared more torn up than the rest of us. Captain Lorde only seemed angry.

“I’d like to say a few words,” Tim chimed in, his black hair sticking to the back of his neck as he stared solemnly at Robbie’s grave.

“Go ahead, Zhang.”

“Robbie was a good man. We served together many times in many countries all over the world. He was a great teammate, the best gym buddy you could ask for, and he made fried rice that could put my mom’s to shame.
